EC asked to accept Kazi Zafar's candidature for JS polls

Thursday, 18 December 2008

Staying the High Court orders, the Supreme Court (SC) Wednesday asked the Election Commission (EC) to accept the candidatures of Kazi Zafar Ahmed of Jatiya Party, and Abdus Sobhan and Abdul Gafur of BNP for contesting the December 29 parliamentary elections, reports UNB.
Chamber Judge M Joynul Abedin passed the orders following separate petitions filed against the High Court orders that had upheld the EC decisions canceling the candidatures of the petitioners.
Jatiya Party leader Kazi Zafar, a corruption-convict, earlier filed nomination papers to contest the parliamentary elections from Comilla-11 constituency, while BNP's Abdus Sobhan for Barisal-1 and Abdul Gafur for Comilla-10 constituencies, lawyers for the petitioners said.
On a similar stay petition against the High Court rejection order filed by Awami League presidium member Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, the chamber judge posted the matter for hearing today (Thursday) in the regular bench of the Appellate Division.
