EC can learn from our neighbour
Saturday, 19 April 2014
I thank the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) for accepting the bitter truth that violence would have occurred in the upazila elections even if he had been in the country during the polls. It means he has acknowledged that he is unable to arrange a free, fair and peaceful election. From the beginning, the present EC failed to keep any promise.
The CEC left Dhaka for the USA on March 3 and returned home on April 14. During this time election to 245 upazilas in three phases was held which were marred by widespread violence, vote rigging, ballot boxes stuffing by the ruling party activists. We see the Election Commission (EC) of our neighbouring country, India, and wonder when we will have a strong and independent EC like that.
