EC cancels 1,080 UZ polls nominations

The Election Commission (EC) has cancelled 1,080 nominations of 481 Upazila Parishad for elections to as many local government bodies slated for Jan 22, an official said Friday, reports bdnews24.com.
Initially, the EC has validated 8,896 candidates.
Md Abdul Baten, senior assistant secretary at the EC Secretariat, told the news agency, of the cancelled candidates 523 stood for chairman, 370 for vice chairman and 187 for woman vice chairman posts.
As many as 9,976 candidates have submitted nomination papers for the three posts.
Of 8,896 valid candidates 3,699 are chairmen, 3,173 vice chairmen and 2,024 women vice chairmen.
Those of the nominees whose nominations were cancelled can appeal with the EC on Dec. 20 and 21 and the hearing would be held on Dec. 23 and 24, Baten said.
The last date for withdrawal of nomination is Dec. 31.
Dec. 13 was the last day for submission of nomination, and the scrutiny started on Dec 17 and ended on Dec 19.
BSS adds from Chittagong: The nomination papers of 38 out of total 382 candidates in the upcoming upazila polls for the posts of chairman, vice-chairman (male) and vice chairman ( female ) in 14 upazilas in the district had been declared invalid due to various reasons on the last date of scrutiny yesterday (Friday).
Officials said, the nomination papers of 38 candidates were declared invalid on the ground of having default loans, their involvement in profitable public and autonomous organisations, enlisted contractor with various government departments under respective upazila and for being existing UP chairman.
Of the cancelled nomination papers, 21 had been dropped for the chairman posts, 11 for vice chairman (male) and 6 for vice chairman (female), sources said.
Earlier, a total of 157 candidates of different political parties and independent ones had filed nomination papers for upazila chairman, 156 for vice chairman (male) and 69 for vice chairman (female ) in 14 upazilas of the district.
