Sunday, 2 November 2008
The Election Commission (EC) Saturday heard statements of objection against the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami as a party, including "proof of war crimes" from the War Crimes Facts Finding Committee (WCFFC), reports bdnews24.com.
Jamaat did not appear at the hearing, having earlier asked for a five-day deferment of the hearing to prepare its own statement in answer to the objectors.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda, and fellow election commissioners M Sakhawat Hussain and Muhammad Sohul Hussain, concluded the two-hour hearing at the EC Secretariat at around 2pm.
Other groups who spoke against the party are the Sector Commanders Forum (SCF), Muktijoddha Sangsad, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, Projonmo 71, Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee (GDNC) and Amra Muktijoddhar Sontan.
After the hearing, WCFFC convener MA Hassan said: "We have submitted proof of involvement of a number of leading Jamaat members in war crimes."
"Jamaat-e-Islami has implemented a religion-based agenda in this country backed by foreign forces," he added.
