EC in dilemma on holding DCC polls in July

Monday, 6 April 2009

The Election Commission (EC) is in dilemma over holding the elections of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) in July this year, as planned, for the absence of relevant laws for the polls, reports UNB.
"I don't see the possibility of holding the DCC polls in July as the proposed new laws have not reached our hands," Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain told the journalists replying to a question at his office Sunday.
The holding of the DCC elections is wholly dependent on the laws to be passed by the parliament, he said. "We'll be able to specify the timeframe for the DCC polls after first session of parliament is over."
The Election Commissioner apprehended that if the parliament takes more time and delays to pass the proposed laws, the commission will have to hold the DCC polls later even after the rainy season.
He made it clear that after the month of July the country would face rain and natural calamity, making the electioneering difficult for the people.
When his attention was drawn to the posters seen in the city of some aspirant DCC candidates, Sakhawat said the Commission would issue a notification and also send letters to the law enforcing agencies to take action against such posters in the city areas.
He said the commission would request the political parties not to support such people, who are displaying posters prematurely, at the time of the DCC polls. "The commission will also take note of such persons."
