‘Election and terrorism can’t go together’

Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar urged on Wednesday the law enforcers to uphold the dignity of uniform and not to be biased while performing their election duties, reports UNB.
"Keep up the dignity of your uniform, exercise restraint and don't be overenthusiastic," the election commissioner said while reading out a written statement at a press briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city around 11:45am.
Mentioning the members of law enforcement agencies as big supportive stakeholders for holding a fair election, he said, "Treat all equally and perform your duties neutrally."
"We don't want to be stigmatised by holding an unfair election. A fair election is not possible only with the participation of all political parties... it shouldn't only be lawful but also be free, fair and neutral. Whoever wins the polls, you make sure that the people of the country are not defeated."
Expressing concern over the growing violence and terrorism ahead of the upcoming 11th parliamentary elections, Mahbub Talukdar said the election and terrorism cannot go on all together.
"If we fail to hold a free and fair election after 47 years of independence, the sacrifice of 3.0 million martyrs for independence and democracy will go in vain, which cannot be allowed," he said.
Pointing at the returning officers and others involved in the election process, he said, "Please keep up your conscience..."
Mahbub Talukdar called upon the voters to go to polling centres and cast their votes without fear.
"Cast your votes for the candidates of your choice. Don't succumb to fear or fall into any trap," the election commissioner urged the voters.
