CHITTAGONG, June 1: The Election Commission is strictly monitoring the mode of election campaign of the candidates, especially the two major candidates for mayoral post of Chittagong City Corporation election scheduled on June 17.
The EC this time has imposed stringent restrictions compelling the candidates to follow election rules. It is observing closely if any of the mayoral candidates is violating them. That might be a reason why the vote campaign has, to some extent, run down, a senior election officer told the FE this afternoon.
"We have kept a close eye on the mayoral candidates particularly. One election official is employed in each of the 41 wards of the CCC if any candidate is violating the EC rules and its code of conduct," said Farhad Hussain, Chittagong district election officer (DEO) said.
With the last withdrawal of mayoral candidature and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Afsaruddin Chowdhury the runners for the top elected post of the CCC now stands at eight. Fifty-nine are vying for 14 councilors reserved for women and 249 for 41 councilors.
The election symbols will be allocated tomorrow (Wednesday).
