Political parties may get financial assistance from the national exchequer during the next general elections.
All the parties registered with the Election Commission (EC) will be eligible for the assistance, said the EC sources in the city Monday, reports BSS.
According to the sources, the extent of the assistance will depend on the number of nominations of the candidates to the parliamentary seats.
The sources further said that the type of financial assistance could be other than cash form like posters and leaflets.
Earlier, the EC announced that it would arrange common venues for all the registered parties to hold their election rallies. The EC will bear all the costs for the venue and the sound system.
Joint Secretary of the EC Nurul Islam Khan told the news agency that the EC would bring some necessary changes to the rules and regulations relating to the registration of political parties, ensuring no paper-based parties get any assistance from the state.
He, however, said that the changes would be brought through consultations with the political parties.
A total of 39 political parties were registered with the EC during the ninth general elections. Of them, 34 parties got less than 1.0 per cent vote when one party did not participate in the election.
