EC rejects BCL demand to drop Khaleda's name from voter list

Wednesday, 3 December 2008

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Tuesday made a plea to the Election Commission (EC) for deleting ex-prime minister (PM) and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's name from the voter list as they alleged she gave wrong information in registering as voter, reports UNB.
An eight-member BCL team handed over the student organisation's memorandum to the EC dispatch desk at around 2.00 pm. They said she mentioned August 15, 1947 as her date of birth. "It's not her real date of birth," the BCL claimed in its letter to the EC.
They contended that she had used her various dates of birth on several occasions, which they said had been published in newspapers.
The BCL alleged a vested quarter with a political motive tried to wipe out the incidents of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's killing on August 15 by using the date as her date of birth.
"This heinous conspiracy of giving false information has surprised the nation," said the student organisation.
When his attention was drawn to the memorandum submitted by the BCL leaders, Election Commissioner Brig Gen (rtd) M Sakhawat Hossain said he was not aware of the memo and indicated that the newly framed politico-electoral rules doesn't recognise political student fronts.
"I don't recognise Chattra League," he told journalists at his office.
