EC to send EPR convicts' list to DCs to disqualify them from poll

Wednesday, 29 October 2008

The Election Commission (EC) will send the lists of persons convicted under the Emergency Powers Rules (EPR) to the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to disqualify them from contesting the upcoming parliamentary elections, as the reformist interim regime intends to present the polls as a model, reports UNB.
"The list of the EPR convicts will come to us and then we'll send it to you," Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda told deputy commissioners (DCs) at a training-workshop arranged for them at the NEC auditorium Tuesday as part of the preparations for holding the polls.
He said all information about the contesting candidates would be disseminated among the people in the constituencies concerned so the voters could choose the honest and competent ones as their representatives.
"We want to see the candidates for the parliamentary elections as role models. So it's necessary to inform (people) all about them," he told the function, as the interim regime desires a clean fresh start.
The election, set for December 18, takes place against the backdrop of a clean-up drive that has put many former lawmakers and ministers behind bars on corruption and crime charges.
