EC to start preparing voters' list from Rajshahi on July 15

Tuesday, 26 June 2007

The Election Commission (EC) is going to start the main task of voter-list preparation on July 15 from Rajshahi, without prior consultation with the political parties.
Before the start, the EC would amend the Voter Roll Ordinance 1982 which is necessary to legalise the voter-list-with-photograph project, Election Commissioner M Sohul Hussain told reporters at his office Monday, reports UNB.
"The main task (of voter list preparation) may start from July 15… There is no scope for stopping the activities as the election will be delayed then," he said.
"As there is no disagreement among the political parties, the task will start without discussing it with them… But we (EC) would definitely sit with the political parties before amending the Representation of People Order."
Those who would work in Rajshahi have already visited the Sripur pilot scheme on voters' list with photograph plus national identity (ID) card, the election commissioner said.
The Sripur project would complete by June 30, Sohul expressed the hope, saying that those who would be left out would have the opportunity to be voters at the upazila level.
The voters' list of Sripur would be made final, as there is no such fault and the project is very successful, he said. But the list would be finalised after amending the Voter Roll Ordinance.
Replying to a query, the election commissioner said the time of submitting tender, that was floated for procuring necessary equipment of the voter-list project, has been extended from July 1 to July 8.
Asked about the political representatives' involvement in the task of voters' list at grassroots level, Sohul said their involvement is not needed. But the representatives were communicating themselves and the Union Parishad (UP) chairmen, members and government officials were helping a lot.
"Some, who are not getting importance, are telling that the task would accelerate if the help of political parties was taken… Actually they are biased," Sohul mentioned.
