EC to update voter list after Eid-ul-Fitr
Monday, 25 May 2015
The Election Commission (EC) will start updating the voter list across the country after Eid-ul Fitr, reports UNB.
"The process of updating the voter list will begin after Eid. Now we're taking necessary preparations," Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz told reporters at his EC Secretariat office on Sunday.
The data of young people, aged less than 18 but above 15, will also be collected this time with a view to providing them with national identity (NID) cards, he said.
The young citizens, whose data to be collected, will be registered as voters when their ages will exceed 18.
At a recent meeting, the Election Commission has decided in principle to collect data of all young citizens, aged between 15 and 17, during the next voters' list updating exercise for providing them with NID cards.
If the NID cards are finally provided to young nationals, all Bangladeshis who were born before January 1, 2000 will be eligible for the NID cards for the first time. Now the young people, aged above 18 (voters), are ineligible for the NID cards.
The commission also planned to update the voter list and collect the data of the young people in three phases. Some 7.2 million young citizens will be eligible for the NID cards this year.
According to the commission's statistics, there are now 96.22 million voters in the country.
