EC to urge govt to lift ban on indoor politics countrywide

Wednesday, 19 September 2007

The Election Commission (EC) would request the government in December to lift the ban on indoor politics across the country, reports UNB.
"We'll go to the government in December and request to lift the ban (on indoor politics) countrywide…Because we are to hold elections to Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), Khulna City Corporation (KCC) and so on from January next… So, it would be necessary to lift the ban (countrywide) to hold the elections," Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda told reporters Tuesday.
Asked about getting necessary equipment for the voter list project in time, the CEC said they would get 4,000 laptops in October and start the countrywide task of voter listing in mid-October.
"We'll get the equipment timely… We would get 2,000 laptops on October 10 and another 2000 on Oct 25," the CEC said.
Asked how the EC would get the equipment as there are some problems relating to the procurement process, he said, "(I) won't say how (the EC will get the equipment)."
"The EC has been preparing the schedule as to when and where the voter listing work would be conducted," he said, adding that the schedule would be made public within a day or two.
