EC wants to see elected govt soon: CEC

The Election Commission (EC) wants to see an elected government as soon as possible, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda said Sunday, as the work of voter listing is going full steam ahead, reports UNB.
Under this determination, the EC would complete formulating the voter list of Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet City Corporations, another 10 municipalities and 20 upazilas by November.
"We will complete the task (of voter list) as soon as possible after getting the large-scale equipment through tender, though (according to the EC-announced election roadmap) the task is to complete in October (2008)," the CEC told reporters at a press briefing.
Election commissioners M Sohul Hussain and M Sakhawat Hussain were also present at the briefing.
"We will keep maintaining the momentum," the CEC Huda said, indicating the pace of work attained by the EC after having some necessary equipment as courtesy gift from different organisations.
The task of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), where estimated voter figure is 15,98,000, is expected to start on November 5 and continue about 35 days while it starts on October 20 in Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) where estimated voters are 2,82,000 and will continue about 26 days.
And the voter listing in Barisal City Corporation (BCC) where estimated voter number is 241,000 would start also on October 20 and continue about 32 days.
Besides the three city corporations, the task would start on September 12 in Taherpur Upazila in Sunamganj, on 15 in Poba municipality in Rajshahi, on 20 in Mymensingh Sadar Upazila, September 24 in Sitakunda and Raojan upazilas in Chittagong, Savar Sadar Upazila (estimated voter 475,000), Comilla Sadar Upazila and Rangpur Sadar Upazila and 28 in Rupsa Upazila in Khulna.
The staggered task of voter listing will begin on October 16 in Tangail Sadar Upazila (and municipality), on 20 in Gazipur municipality, Chapainawabganj municipality and Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila (and municipality) and on October 25 in Bogra municipality.
The task starts in Jessore Upazila on November 3, on 4 in Muktagachha Upazila (and municipality) in Mymensingh and Comilla Sadar South Upazila, on November 5 in Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban Sadar upazilas (and all municipalities) and Fooltala Upazila in Khulna, on 7 in Gangachara Upazila of Rangpur and on November 24 in Tongi municipality.
The EC would complete 10-11 per cent task of preparing voter list during the time, the CEC Huda said.
