ECNEC approves 10 peaking power plants project

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved Tuesday seven development projects involving Tk 138.22 billion that included a large project to install 10 peaking power plants with total capacity of 830mw, reports UNB.
Of the total amount, Tk 129.08 billion will come from the government exchequer while Tk 9.14 billion will come as project assistance.
The approval was given at the ECNEC meeting held at the NEC with its chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
The installation of 830mw peaking power plants under the Power Division will be completed by December 2011 at a cost of Tk 72.03 billion to be entirely borne by the government, said Planning Minister AK Khandaker while briefing reporters after the meeting.
He said that the new peaking power plants, based on furnace oil, would meet the peak hour demands.
The capacity of the 10 power plants are: Gopalganj 100mw, Faridpur 50mw, Bera 80mw, Baghabari 50mw, Katakhali 50mw, Santahar 50mw, Hathazari 100mw, Dohazari 100mw, Daudkandi 50mw and Ghorashal 200mw.
The other projects approved in the meeting are Comprehensive Village Development Programme-2nd phase under the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division (Tk 1.06 billion), production and development of high quality paddy, wheat and maize seeds under the agriculture ministry (Tk 5.97 billion), participatory small scale water resources sector project-3rd phase under the local government division (Tk 7.81 billion), primary education stipend project 2nd phase (revised) under the primary and mass education ministry (Tk 40.35 billion), construction of Bangladesh Film Archive building under the information ministry (Tk 750 million), and modernisation and rehabilitation (3rd revised) project for the units No. 3,4 and 5 of Ashuganj Power Plant Complex (Tk 10.25 billion).
