The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) Tuesday approved eight development schemes involving Tk 31.36 billion (3,136 crore) that includes the Laksam-Chandpur section railway rehabilitation project aimed at ensuring safe and fast train communication, reports UNB.
The approval came from the ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room with ECNEC chairperson and PM (Prime Minister) Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
"Of the total projects cost of Tk 31.36 billion, Tk 14.14 billion will come from the government, Tk 400 million from the JDCF and Tk 16.82 billion as project assistance," said Planning Minister AK Khandker while briefing reporters after the meeting.
Planning Division Secretary Manjur Hossain was present at the briefing.
ECNEC meeting sources said the PM directed the concerned authority to introduce zoning education system in the capital to give some relief to the students as well as their guardians from the nagging gridlock.
Planning Ministry sources said that the railway rehabilitation project would be implemented at a cost of Tk 1.69 billion to be entirely borne by the government. The project is likely to be completed by June 2013.
Under the project, some 55.01 kilometres of railway track (51.12 km main line and 3.89 km of loop and side line) will be rehabilitated. The project area covers Laksam Upazila of Comilla, Hajiganj, Shahrasti and Sadar upazilas of Chandpur district.
Besides, some six railway stations will be re-constructed and two others will be repaired under the project. The economic life of all the eight stations has already expired as these were constructed in 1895.
The six railway stations to be reconstructed are Shahtali, Modhuroad, Balakhal, Hajiganj, Mehar and Chitoshiroad while the two railway stations to be repaired are Chandpur and Chandpur Court. A waiting hall will also be set up at the Chandpur railway station.
