ECNEC approves Padma Bridge, voters' roll and ID projects

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) Monday approved the Padma Bridge and the voters' roll with photograph and national identity (ID) card projects.
The Padma Bridge will be constructed at a cost of Tk 101.618 billion by the financial year (FY) 2014-2015 and the preparation of the voters' roll with photograph and national ID card will be completed by FY2010 at a cost of Tk 5.805 billion, official sources said.
The projects were endorsed at a meeting of the ECNEC, held at the NEC conference room in Dhaka Monday.
Apart from the Padma Bridge and the voters' list and national ID card projects, the ECNEC approved nine other projects involving a total cost of Tk 24.459 billion at the meeting Monday.
Presided over by Chief Adviser of the caretaker government, Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed, who is also the chairman of the ECNEC, the highest economic policy making body, the meeting was attended among others by the advisers of different ministries, secretaries and high officials.
Sources in the Planning Commission (PC) told the FE that out of the estimated cost of the Padma Bridge at Tk 101.618 billion, Tk 32.811 billion would be provided by the government and the rest by the donors as project assistance.
The World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Japan government have already assured the government of providing assistance for the construction the Padma Bridge.
Out of the estimated cost of the voters' roll and national ID card project, the government will provide Tk 2.359 billion. Donors will be approached to make available the remaining part of the project cost.
The four projects that were placed before Monday's ECNEC meeting but did not receive approval include the Tk 600 million Dhaka Medical College Expansion and Modernisation project under the Heath and Family Welfare Ministry, Tk 360 million project under the Bangladesh Air Force, Tk 936.8 million project on protection of Brahmaputra embankment in Kurigram district under the Bangladesh Water Development Board and Tk 501.8 million Raghurampur-Kishoreganj-Bhoirab road development project under the Roads and Highways (R&H) Department.
