ECNEC okays 5-project worth Tk65.53b

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has cleared a total of five projects involving Tk65.53 billion (Tk6,553 crore). The approval came on Tuesday at the 5th meeting of ECNEC in the current fiscal, held at the NEC conference room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting. Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal, after the meeting, briefed reporters the outcome. The planning minister said the ECNEC cleared five projects with an outlay of Tk65.53b. “Of the total project cost, the government will provide Tk39.47b (Tk3,947cr) from the national exchequer while Tk25.87b (Tk2,587cr) will come as project assistance and the organisation concerned will contribute Tk178.5 million (Tk17.85cr) from the own fund,” Kamal informed. He said four projects are new while one is revised in the approved five projects. He said the government has launched a development project involving Tk33.17b (Tk3,317cr) which will provide improved sewerage facilities for the growing number of dwellers living in Dhaka city. “Dasherkandi Sewerage Treatment Plant” plans to treat the sewerage using modern method alongside protecting the environment of the area. The ECNEC approved the project at its 5th meeting this fiscal year. Talking about the Dasherkandi Sewerage Treatment Plant, the planning minister said the project mainly aims at treating sewerage through modern method alongside protecting the environment of that area and the adjacent Hatirjheel project area. The sewerage treatment plant would be set up at Khilgaon in the city with the capacity of treating 500 million liters sewerage per day alongside construction of one sewage lifting station. Dhaka WASA is entrusted to implement the project by December 2019. Mustafa Kamal said Dhaka WASA can provide sewerage facilities to only 20 per cent of city dwellers through its lone sewage treatment plant at Pagla under Kadamtali Thana. Considering the growing demand, Dhaka WASA has recently framed a master plan under which it aims to set up 11 sewerage treatment plants in the city, according to BSS.
