ECNEC okays nine dev projects worth Tk 16.43b

Country's highest economic policy making body ECNEC Tuesday approved nine development projects worth Tk 16.43 billion to upgrade infrastructure and alleviate poverty. Presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the ECNEC (executive committee of the national economic council) at its meeting in Dhaka endorsed the development schemes. Acting Planning Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam said nine approved projects will receive Tk 7.24 billion out of domestic resources and the remaining Tk 9.19 billion from foreign aid. He said of the projects, the ECNEC approved a Tk 7.95 billion Char (Shoal) livelihood (2nd phase) scheme which will reduce extreme poverty of nearly one million poor people of char areas of the country's north-west region by 2016. The scheme will ensure quality life of ultra poor and vulnerable men, women and children of char areas in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Pabna and Tangail districts as it will create income generation opportunities for them. The ECNEC at its meeting revised a Tk 1.89 billion project on "Construction of a PC girder bridge over Surma river at Kazir Bazar area and Amborkhana bypass road in Sylhet". Seven other projects are: Tk 900 million for further development of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Tk 900 million for services to vulnerable children, Tk 1.22 billion Rehabilitation and Development of Fisheries establishments for increasing fish production, Tk 260 million Natrokona-Dharmapasha-Jamalpur-Sylhet road development, Tk1.23 billion Construction of East-West Connecting road from Rajshahi-Naogaon main road at Mohonpur to Rajshahi-Natore road, Tk 540 million Barni Baor (wet land) development Project and Tk 1.69 billion Primary Education development. ECNEC members including Finance Minister A M A Muhith, Planning Minister AK Khandker, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, Advisers to the Prime Minister, Members of the Planning Commission and secretaries were present at the meeting.
