Economic crisis due to political disaster, observes Mainul

COMILLA, Aug 20 (UNB): Information Adviser Mainul Hosein observed that country's economic situation was thrown into disarray by political disaster, which the present caretaker government is trying hard to heal.
"There was going to be civil war in the country. We, taking over power, prevented that from happening with spontaneous support of the people," he said.
Mainul made the stark observations about the past political era while exchanging views with government officials and local elite in the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) conference room here Monday.
The information adviser told his audience that the country had been passing through a "revolution" since the regime change last January amid a grave political crisis over the issues of general elections.
"Many changes have been brought about in the country under the wind of change that has been blowing. There might arise some problems during the revolution. We will have to have patience to get over these problems," he said.
He cited some positive changes already discernible along the line of action by the interim government, including a purge against corruption.
"There is no theft in the country now -- there are no relief thieves. The disrepute as a corrupt nation is going to diminish as a result of changes that have been brought about," Mainul told the meeting, with DC Md Manjurur Rahman in the chair.
