Tuesday, 1 April 2014

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki said women’s overall empowerment would not be possible without their ‘economic empowerment’.
“Only women invest lion share of their income for their families and in social and health services. Increasing of women’s income means increasing of investment,” she said.
The State Minister also said the government has been taking various steps to empower women economically, according to a news agency.
She made the remark while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of a symposium titled ‘South Asia Women’s Entrepreneurship Symposium (SAWES)’ held at Hotel Westin in the city Tuesday.
US Ambassador in Dhaka Dan Mozena, President of the Bangladesh Federation of Women Entrepreneurs Rokia Rahman and Asia Foundation Bangladesh Country Representative Hasan Mazumdar, were, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Speaking at the function, Mozena said women cannot be left behind as women are the ones who lead the way. “Development and progress are driven by women.”
Some 46 women entrepreneurs from South Asian countries are taking part in the three-day symposium.
