Experts have put maximum emphasis on the ecosystems-based approach to further intensify the food production to contribute more to the national economy side by side meeting the nutritional demands of own people in Bangladesh, reports BSS.
In this respect, they focused on planning improved infrastructure and water management in a pilot sub-polder, community water management in the Ganges river basin, cropping system options, new livelihood opportunities for women and evaluation of changed practices by the community.
The experts including water scientists, agriculturists, development practitioners and policymakers made these suggestions at a two-day workshop ended at a local hotel Wednesday. Dr Paul Fox, IRRI Representative for Bangladesh, was in the chair.
The main objective of the workshop named "Polder community water management" is sustainable intensification to increase food, nutritional and livelihood security, an initiative of WLE programme with the goal of reducing the problems of food insecurity in the polders of the coastal zone through adopting more resilient, productive, profitable and sustainable cropping.
The key to achieving this goal is improved drainage management, which can be achieved through small infrastructure improvements together with improved drainage management.
