Edible oil prices increase in city markets

Prices of edible oil increased and the prices of sugar further declined at wholesale level only while the prices of other essential commodities remained unchanged in the city markets over the past week.
Traders said during the last week at the wholesale level soybean oil was selling at 2580-Tk 2600 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 2470 per maund, super palm oil was selling at Tk 2550-Tk 2560 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 2450-Tk 2560 per maund.
At the wholesale level, palm oil was selling at Tk 2500 per maund compared with its previous rates Tk 2460-Tk 2470 per maund during the last week.
The wholesale traders said prices of edible oil in the local markets have increased mainly due to price hike of the item in the international market in the recent past.
On Thursday last, crude soybean oil was selling at US$850 per tonne and palm oil at Malaysian ringgit 2575 per tonne in international market, traders said.
Traders said the local consumers can hardly enjoy the benefits of duty cuts on import of edible oil in the national budget due to imposition of other taxes like VAT on the importers.
They (traders) said the government has only exempted 5.0 per cent customs duty, but still now they have to pay about 18 per cent tax on import of edible oil.
At the retail level, a five-litre can of edible oil was selling at Tk 365-Tk 375 compared with its previous rate at Tk 365.
During the last week, at the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk 910 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 980 per maund.
At the retail level sugar was selling at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg during the last week, unchanged from the previous week.
Sources said recently the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) has re-fixed the price of sugar at Tk 25 per kg at mill gate to sell out an amount of 90,000 tonnes of unsold sugar of the last year.
During the last week at the wholesale level prices of Indian variety of Swarna and Paari remained unchanged at Tk 750-Tk 780 per maund, Lata at Tk 850-Tk 860 per maund.
Prices of IRRI variety of rice remained unchanged at Tk 700-Tk 710 per maund, Nazirshail from Savar at Tk 850-Tk 900 per maund and Nazirshail from North Bengal at Tk 920-Tk 930 per maund.
Prices of Minicate variety of rice remained unchanged at Tk 1010-1020 per maund at wholesale level, traders said.
At the retail level, prices of fine varieties of rice remained unchanged at Tk 26-Tk 28 per kg and the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 21-Tk 22 per kg.
During the last week, at the retail level, prices of brinjal remained unchanged at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg, and okra, snake gourd and ridge gourd at Tk 22-Tk 24 per kg, traders said.
Potato price remained unchanged in the city markets at Tk 20-Tk 21 per kg over the past week.
Prices of the fine variety of lentil remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 72 per kg and its Turkish variety at Tk 56-Tk 60 per kg. Prices of 'moong' pulse remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 74 per kg during the last week.
During the last week ginger was selling at Tk 35-Tk 40 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. During the last week beef was selling at Tk 180 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.
Traders said garlic was selling at Tk 40-Tk 60 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.
In the last week, prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk 100 per kg and eggs at Tk 52 per dozen.
During the last week, at retail level prices of onion remained unchanged at Tk 24-Tk 26 per kg and green chilli at Tk 48-Tk 50 per kg.
Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. During the last week a medium-size hilsa fish was selling at Tk 250-Tk 350, unchanged from the previous week.
During the last week at the retail level packaged coarse flour was selling at Tk 27-Tk 28 per kg, unchanged from the previous week, in the city markets. Traders said prices of refined salt remained unchanged at Tk 18 per kg.
