Editors' Council condemns attack
FE Report | Tuesday, 6 March 2018
The Editors' Council expressed Monday deep concern over the attack on eminent writer Prof Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal.
Condemning the incident, the council also wanted the government and the law enforcement agencies to take necessary steps in this regard.
He was stabbed indiscriminately on his university campus in a bid to kill him, but fortunately he escaped the barbaric attack.
In a statement, the council said Mr Iqbal is a popular teacher and prominent writer. His write-ups on scientific issues attract children and youths. He writes columns in various newspapers which are very popular.
He has been working relentlessly for a long time to uphold the spirit of liberation war, the statement said, adding that he has also taken to the streets demanding trial of war criminals.
Militant outfits have long been issuing death threat to the meritorious teacher, but he continued with his works ignoring those, it said.
Attempt to kill such persons means to create a vacuum of intellectuals in the country, it said, adding that the Pakistanis did the same thing in 1971.
"It is not only an attack on Mr Iqbal but also on each intellectual citizen of the country," the statement said.
The council expressed the hope that 'bold steps' would be taken to contain the spread of militancy in the country.
"We also want assurance so that all the citizens of the country can lead life safely," it added.
