Editors' Council urges protection of journalists covering election

The Editors' Council has urged the authorities and political parties to ensure the safety of journalists covering the upcoming elections.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the council said journalists face a range of risks while gathering and disseminating news during election periods, and that ensuring their safety and security in the field is of paramount importance.
It called on the state, the interim government, the Election Commission and relevant law enforcement agencies to provide adequate protection for journalists engaged in election coverage.
The council also urged political parties to play an effective role in safeguarding reporters.
The Editors' Council expressed hope that all stakeholders would recognise the gravity of the issue and take effective measures to ensure journalists' safety throughout the election period.
The statement was signed on behalf of the Editors' Council by its president, Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age, and its general secretary, Dewan Hanif Mahmud, editor and publisher of Bonik Barta.
