Wednesday, 22 June 2011

An early strike by Russian forward Eduard Sakhnevich guided Sheikh Russell KC to a solitary goal victory over 10-man Abahani Limited in the GrameenPhone Bangladesh League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) in the city Tuesday, reports UNB. With this result, Sheikh Russell KC moved to the 3rd slot securing 41 points from 21 matches while Abahani Limited remained at 40 points from 20 outings. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club dominates the league table with 50 points, followed by Muktijoddha Sangsad KC in 2nd slot with 47 points, both playing 21 matches. In the day's match, Eduard Sakhnevich scored the match-winner for Sheikh Russell KC in the 16th minute with a powerful right-footer from inside the D-box after teammate Mobarak Hossain's attempt came his way as the Abahani custodian Shahidul Alam Sohel fisted the ball away. Abahani Limited failed to make justice to their name as they had to face difficulty to produce moves in front of Sheikh Russell's organised defence. However, taking the field as substitute Abahani veteran striker Alfaz Ahmed managed a scoring chance in the 74th minute, but his powerful shot from inside the D-box narrowly went out of play beside the side bar. The traditional sky blue Dhanmondi outfit, Abahani Limited had to play with 10 men after referee Azad Rahman showed a direct red card to custodian Sohel in the 75th minute for his foul play. Red Card: Sohel (Abahani Limited) Sheikh Russell KC - Mamun, Bappi (Babu), Prodip, Yusuf, Mesbahul, Moro, Eduard, Raju, Mobarak, Raphael and Abass. Abahani Limited - Amit, Nazrul, Aminu, Uzzal, Siraji, Sohag (Abul), Lincoln, Ibrahim, Ronny (Alfaz), Sohel and Saikat.
