Education attuned to the job market

Saturday, 23 June 2007

WE have now a good number of private colleges and universities to develop skilled manpower for the country. A number of specialized technical educational institutes are also there to meet the needs of different sectors for technical and specialised human resources. Despite it, we have not set and achieved the target of having enough skilled manpower as per the need of the time.
It is reported that country's promising industrial and other important sectors have to hire foreign experts due to the shortage of local experts. This shortfall hits different sectors including glass and ceramic industries and even the education sector. On the contrary, the reality is that the number of unemployed youth has been also increasing.
Globalisation has not only changed the pattern of business and trade activities throughout the world, it has also created the requirement to bring about drastic changes in the academic curricula. But the colleges and universities in our country are yet to upgrade or change their curricula as per the need of the time. The country's educational institutions are mostly teaching the traditional subjects and are hardly able to raise their academic standard to the international level. So all concerned in these institutions should seriously think of redesigning their course materials on different subjects. They should take measures to introduce new disciplines considering the demand of the job market.
