Education policy to ensure constitutional rights stressed

Thursday, 9 April 2009

Speakers at a seminar Wednesday urged the government to formulate an education policy keeping in view of the needs of the time and ensuring the right to education for all, reports UNB.
Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU) organised the seminar titled 'Perspective Education Policy: Our Views' at Dhaka University in the afternoon.
Chaired by BCU president Khan Asaduzzaman Masud, the seminar was addressed, among others, by Rashed Khan Menon of Workers Party, Mujahidul Islam Selim of CPB and Prof Sufi Mustafizur Rahman of Jahangirnagar University.
Mir Musharraf Hossen, BCU central leader, presented the keynote paper at the seminar while BCU general secretary Manabendra Dev moderated.
Mir Musharraf said the education sector should get eight per cent allocation of the annual budget as recommended by UNICEF. But it was never implemented.
Dr MH Chowdhury Momin urged the government to prepare the primary and higher secondary school teachers for newly introduced 'creative questions'.
He said most of the teachers at the village and subarban areas don't have the requisite efficiency on the creative questions which would hamper them in providing quality education.
JCD leader Hasan Mamun alleged that the government has formed a 16-member committee to formulate a modern education policy without representation of student bodies.
Describing a frustrating scenario of present education, Tanuj Kanti Dey, a teachers' leader, said the government planned a unified curriculum for the students but it was important to take timely decision instead of having a large number of poor students.
