Local heart disease patients, who are not fit for bypass surgery or stenting, can now have treatment with EECP therapy in the country, said speakers at a seminar in the city Monday.
Dr Md Javed Iqbal said, "EECP (enhanced external counter pulsation) is a US FDA-approved scientific therapy to remove artery blockage and prevent heart failure without any operation or stenting."
He said, "This therapy, which is popular in the US, China, Europe, and neighbouring India, has been launched in the country one year ago. The treatment is painless, risk-free, and cost-effective, and a patient has to take 35-sessions in two months."
The EECP therapy is available at Bangladesh National Heart Diseases Institute and Hospital, the Medical Centre Ltd and Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital in Dhaka, at Khaja Yunus Ali Medical College and Hospital in Sirajganj, and at Medimax Hospital in Sylhet.
It would take around Tk 1,20,000 in a private hospital, and a government hospital would charge Tk 500 per day, he added.
Awami League heath and population secretary Badiuzzaman Bhuiyan appreciated the initiative and said, "Stem cell therapy for heart disease patients will be available within next three months in Bangladesh National Heart Diseases Institute and Hospital."
Prof KMHS Shirajul Hoque and Prof Dr M Jalauddin, among others, were present in seminar.
