Eid joys descend on Bangladesh
Tuesday, 29 July 2014
The people of Bangladesh have been celebrating Holy Eid-ul-Fitr today (Tuesday) with solemnity and festivity. In Dhaka city and all across the nation, the mood turned into that of festive joy when Religious Affairs Minister Motiur Rahman made the announcement of sighting of the Shawal moon in Bangladesh’s skies on Monday evening. The announcement marked the end of Holy Ramadan. National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s song ‘Romzaner oi rojar sheshe...’, which has been an integral part of this event for generations now, was played from homes and neighbourhoods. Reports of moon-sighting came in from Sherpur, Rajahshi and Rangpur before the committee could begin its meeting. Many government offices and structures and prominent building, establishments and places of amusements have been illumined to mark the Eid. State-owned hospitals, children’s homes, disability centres, shelter homes, safe homes and jails are serving festive food for their residents. The state-owned Bangladesh Betar and BTV will broadcast special shows on Eid day and for several days afterwards. Most newspapers have also published special editions or Eid magazines. Local administrations will also host Eid events coordinating with the national level, according to a news agency.
