BRAHMANBARIA, Oct 01: The district town is in grip of Eid and Durga Puja shopping fever as the traditional market places are bustling with shoppers from all walks of life, sources said.
Market sources said gathering of people for shopping in the local markets is increasing and sales are showing an upward trend. Footpaths, makeshift sales centres and big shopping malls, which have been intensely illuminated, are crowded with shoppers, especially women and adolescents from late morning to midnight.
Authorities of different shopping malls have also offered special prizes and lucky coupons for attracting potential buyers.
Shopkeepers said the town has been witnessing heavy traffic congestion since the 1st Ramadan in New Market, Supermarket, City Centre, Ashik Plaza, Pouro Supermarket, Peara Mia Tower, Mela Shopping Malls, Sarak Bazaar, Hamid Molla Shopping Centre, Hawkers Market, TA Road and Kawtali Market areas because of Eid shopping and the upcoming Durga Puja festival.
Most shoppers at New Market and Hawkers Market seemed happy with sales of their products ahead of the two greatest festivals.
People are gathering in the shopping malls of saree, sheet and cloths including silk, georget, 'jamdani' and handloom sarees of Tangail and Pabna. They are also buying shirt, pant, 'panjabi', three-piece, 'salowar-kameez', trousers, breeches, scarf and 'khadi' cloths.
Footwear products are also in heavy demand in the local markets.
Businessmen of those markets, even small vendors at footpaths, have expressed their satisfaction and lauded the government for establishing a trade-friendly atmosphere following the government's recent crackdown on criminals and the anti-crime drive by the law-enforcing agencies.
Talking to this correspondent, President of Supermarket Businessmen Association Md Shahjahan Mia said they are doing better businesses this year and expecting a bumper sale thanks to the favourable trade atmosphere.
