CHITTAGONG, Sept 19: While the holy Eid-ul-Fitr is drawing nearer, Eid shopping is getting momentum in different markets and shopping centres of the port city.
As on previous occasions, sellers are trying to earn a bit more and as such, prices of most of the goods have shot up in the ongoing Eid markets and bargaining between buyers and sellers is being noticed regularly.
On the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the greatest religious festivals of the Muslims, buyers of all category are crowding the markets for purchasing items of their choice.
Most of shopping centres remain open even upto late hours of night. Normally, main attractions of the buyers are new clothes, shoes, jewelleries, cosmetics, etc. While the affluent people are also busy purchasing some other luxury items.
All the markets and shopping malls were festively decorated on this holy occasion and are filled with goods to attract the buyers.
Strict vigilance of the law-enforcers is ensured in all the markets and no untoward incident is reported to have taken place.
BSS adds: Market sources said gathering of the people for shopping around the markets has increased considerably during the last couple of days as most organisations disbursed festival bonus and salaries to their employees.
Port city has been witnessing heavy traffic congestion from mid Ramadan at New Market, Reazuddin Bazar, Jubilee Road, Station Road, Andarkilla, Chawkbazar, Sholoshahar, Nasirabad, Agrabad Commercial Area, Dewan Hat and Bahaddarhat following increasing flow of people on the buying spree on the occasion of the festival.
Traffic police were also seen struggling to tackle the situation in those points. Shop owners in Shopping Complex, New Market, Amin Shopping Centre, Mimi Super Market, Reazuddin Bazar, Central Plaza, Mati Tower, Lucky Plaza, Singapore Market and traditional Zahur Hawkers Market in the city have expressed their satisfaction over the volume of sale so far.
Shopping mall authorities as well as businessmen of major shopping establishments, even the small vendors at footpaths viewed that current improved law and order situation had created a trade-friendly atmosphere this year which would give them a chance to do brisk business in a secure environment.
Deployment of huge police contingents in different strategic city-points and market places, intensive surveillance work by the RAB and engagement of private security men at shopping malls by the concerned authorities have ultimately created a full-proof security arrangement for businessmen as well as shoppers.
A number of traders in both wholesale and retail garments market, however, opined that sale could have increased to almost double compare to other years if people particularly the middle and lower-middle class hadn't had reduced Eid budgets following present financial hardship caused by the unusual hike in prices of essential commodities.
Buyers as well as shoppers said dresses like salwar-kamij, panjabi, sarees and other dresses for children made by fashion houses using local fabrics and materials drew the attraction of fashion lovers.
