Eid shopping gains momentum in Rajshahi

Sunday, 13 September 2009

RAJSHAHI, Sept 12 (BSS): With over a week left for Eid-ul-Fitr, the greatest Muslim religious festival, the Eid shopping has gained momentum here amid substantial supply of consumer goods and enthusiasm among shoppers.
All the shops in the markets are busy now to sell their commodities to the shoppers. The rush of customers at the shopping centres starts from morning and runs until closing of the shops.
Supply of goods, including foreign brands, in the market is abundant. The goods vary from luxury to common household items.
The shops are flooded with garments for men, women and children, with the latest designs.
The shopkeepers are apparently happy with their sale and the profit being earned from their proceeds.
According to the market sources, people of all ages are seen buying their items of choice at Eid markets with enthusiasm.
The buying spree is likely to continue until the last day of the holy Ramadan. With the rise in the number of buyers, traffic jam in the city's busy market places and intersections, particularly in front of shopping centres, have become acute.
Retail price of men's and women's wear, both local and foreign especially Indian, rose by 20 to 25 per cent than the previous year.
The volume of transactions is relatively higher this year as the city's Shaheb Bazar, RDA Market, Sonadighi Silk Market, New Market, Haragram Bazar, Karim Super Market, Gausia Market and Jamal Super Market were humming with Eid-shoppers.
Meanwhile, a large number of makeshift shops have sprung up on the pavements of the city on the Eid occasion. Prices of different varieties of clothes, particularly cotton, silk and synthetic, have registered a sharp rise.
Most of the rich buyers are crowding different shopping centres while the low-income group people are also seen purchasing their desired items from the footpath shops in the city.
The authorities concerned have also taken early and adequate measures in maintaining law and order to help sellers and buyers to have an anxiety-free atmosphere.
Police sources said due to tight security measures undertaken, no untoward incident has so far been taken place anywhere in the region during the Eid shopping that will get further momentum in the coming days.
Police, members of RAB and intelligence personnel are found patrolling the city's major shopping malls side by side with the rural ones.
