Eid shopping gains momentum in Rajshahi, B'baria

RAJSHAHI, Sept 7: With Eid-ul-Fitr drawing near, consumers are on a shopping spree. Shopping malls and markets of the city are seeing packed crowds from morning to evening.
People from rural areas prefer making their Eid purchases from the city to rural haats and markets.
There are more than 50,000 students from various districts of the country study at various educational institutions of the city. They are also thronging the city markets to purchase clothes and commodities for their near and dear ones in the village homes.
As a result, markets and shopping centers specially RDA Market, Shaheb Bazar, New Market, Ganakpara Market and Sonadighi Market are witnessing unprecedented rush this year even well before Eid day.
Shopkeepers say they have packed their shops with the latest fashions for all consumers. The shops of course are decorated with lighting, festoons and colourful displays. Clothes included trousers, shirts, punjabis, sarees, three pieces and prints are in plenty.
Our Brahmanbaria correspondent say shopping fever has gripped the district town, as all market places are bustling with shoppers from all walks of life.
From late morning to midnight, footpaths, makeshift sales centres and big shopping malls, decorated with brilliant illuminations, are crowded with shoppers, mainly women and children.
Authorities of different shopping malls have announced special prizes and offered lucky coupons for attracting the shoppers.
Shopkeepers said the town has been witnessing traffic congestion since the first of Ramadan around New Market, Hawkers Market, Supermarket, City Center, Ashik Plaza, Poura Biponi Bitan, Peara Mia Tower, Sarak Bazar, Tofail Azam Road and Al-Amin Plaza because of Eid shopping.
Talking to this correspondent, Supermarket Businessmen Association (SBA) President Md Shahjahan Mia said they are doing better business this year and expecting bumper sales thanks to a favourable trade atmosphere.
