Eid shopping is slowly gaining momentum in the city with shoppers crowding the malls and markets for buying dresses of their choices as Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest festival of Muslims, is just two weeks away.
Ignoring the government restriction on illumination of markets due to power crisis, many shopping malls, especially in the city's posh areas like Gulshan, Banani and Dhanmondi, have arranged interior lighting, and exterior in some places to attract buyers.
Most of the shopkeepers are displaying men's, women's, and colourful children wears.
Like previous years, Sarees are in top demand for the female customers while Punjabi for the males. Tangail sarees are in great demand. Many businessmen said they have imported clothes to meet the demands of Eid shoppers.
But the prices of clothes, including sarees and three pieces women wear, are very high. Different types of Indian saree are being sold at prices ranging from Tk 800 to Tk 6500 while a fine quality Tangail saree is selling between Tk 550 and Tk 4000.
The sellers said the price hike of essentials put a damper on the Eid festivity.
Authorities of the most of the shopping malls have taken security measures for shoppers. Some markets have announced attractive prizes, discounts or gifts with their items.
Shopkeepers at the city's Eastern Plaza said that the sarees with needlework are on offer for the richer section of people.
Thousands of buyers from lower middle class and lower middle class are busy shopping at makeshift markets on footpaths around the city.
Salwar Kameej is also in great demand, and the Salwar Kameej named after Indian films such as Bunty aur Bali, Veer-Zaraa or Anarkoli are popular among the girls.
Some posh outlets such as Kay Kraft, Sada Kalo, Menz Klub, Westec, Yellow and Cats Eye also have nice and wide collections for gents, specially the youngsters.
The shops at Mouchak and, Gouchia and New Market are also selling both imported and locally made women's wears. Shoppers are also crowding the boutique houses at different markets in the city.
However, salesmen at different shops in the city said they are satisfied with their current sale position and expressed the hope that it would get better in the coming days.
Kamruzzaman Manik, a shopkeeper in the city's New Market, said people are rushing to the shops in large number and added that they are showcasing the latest designs of male and female dresses.
