FE REPORT | Sunday, 1 May 2022

Holy Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival of Muslims, will be celebrated in the country either on May 02 or 03, depending on sighting of the new moon.
The Eid will be celebrated on Monday if Shawwal moon is sighted in Bangladesh's sky on Sunday otherwise the festival will be celebrated on Tuesday, official sources said.
The National Moon Sighting Committee will hold a meeting today (Sunday) evening at the conference room of the Islamic Foundation at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital to fix the date of Eid-ul-Fitr.
President of the National Moon Sighting Committee and State Minister for Religious Affairs Md Faridul Haque Khan will chair the meeting.
The meeting will review the information of the sighting of the moon in the month of Shawwal in the Arabic calendar of 1443 and fix the date for the celebration of the Eid.
Eid ul-Fitr is often called the "Festival of Breaking the Fast." The practice of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the holy month of Ramadan ('Sawm') is one of the five pillars of Islam. The National Eidgah in Dhaka is almost ready for hosting the Eid prayer after two-year of break due to onslaught of Covid-19.
The main Eid prayer will be held at 8.30am on the Eid day, when dignitaries and the VIPs of the country are expected to join the congregation, officials said.
Eid congregations will also be held in other mosques, eidgahs and open spaces across the country.
Meanwhile, thousands of people have already left the capital to celebrate the festival with their near and dear ones at their respective village homes. Besides, all the preparations have been completed across the country, including the capital, for smooth holding of Eid congregations.
The national flag will be hoisted atop government and non-government office buildings on the day.
The main city streets and road islands will be decorated with the national flag and banners inscribed with 'Eid Mubarak' in both Bangla and Arabic. Television channels and radio stations will air special programmes on the day and the days subsequently.
Special diet will be served in hospitals, jails, government children homes, centres for persons with disabilities, shelter homes, orphanages, vagrant welfare and destitute welfare centres on the Eid day.
