Eight die of dengue

Eight more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Tuesday morning, raising the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 223 this year, report agencies.
The Directorate General of Health Services, or DGHS, said as many as 349 were hospitalised in Dhaka among the new dengue patients until Tuesday morning.
In addition, 270 were hospitalised in the Dhaka Division, 30 in the Mymensingh Division, 160 in the Chattogram Division, 122 in the Khulna Division, 52 in the Rajshahi Division, 18 in the Rangpur Division, 101 in the Barishal Division, and six in the Sylhet Division.
With the new counts, the number of hospitalised dengue patients has reached 44,764 this year. A total of 223 people died among them.
As many as 3,680 patients are currently undergoing treatment for dengue in hospitals across the country. They include 1,763 in the capital and 1,917 outside Dhaka.
The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.
Last year, 1,705 people lost their lives due to dengue, making it the deadliest year on record.
The DGHS recorded 321,179 dengue cases and 3, 18,749 recoveries last year.
