Ekushey Book Fair draws huge crowd

Saturday, 12 February 2011

The Ekushey Book Fair-2011 witnessed a huge number of visitors Friday as it was the weekend.
Though the number of visitors to the book fair is increasing day by day, some publishers expressed dissatisfaction over the volume of sales.
"The number of visitors is increasing but most of them are not buying any book from the fair," said Al-Amin, a salesman of the Dibya Prokash at the fair.
Meanwhile book lovers said they were frustrated since there were few good books. They, however, expressed hope that the publishers will bring out quality books which will fulfil their desire in the days to come.
"This year, there are hardly high-quality books which are written by eminent writers at the country's largest book fair," Russell, a visitor, told the FE.
Admitting this, Mithun, owner of Shikha Prokashoni, said, "Last year, we sold books worth more than Tk 10 million. But this year the figure seems to be a dream to us."
However, Pearl Publi-shing House sounded positive regarding their sales. "We expect that our sales volume will cross all previous records within the next days of the fair," said a representative of Pearl.
A total of 239 new books arrived at the fair Friday.
