Ekushey book fair ends

The month-long Amar Ekushey book fair ended in the city Saturday as 2,741 new titles hit market during the annual event, with poetry dominating the list, reports BSS.

Large crowds thronged the fair venue on the Bangla Academy premises on the last day. A total of 79 new titles hit the book fair on the day.

Books worth more than Taka 180 million (18 crore) have been sold during the fair, Bangla Academy sources said.

Three publishing houses -- Anna Prakash, Student Wage and Mukto Dhara -- received the 'Bangla Academy Award' for stall decoration this year.

The concluding ceremony of the book fair was held at the Bangla Academy stage, with the academy Chairman Prof Kabir Chowdhury in the chair.

Shahida Khan of Bangla Academy gave an overview of the fair. Academy director general Syed Mohammad Shahed also spoke at the concluding ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Kabir Choudhury said the Ekushey Book Fair has been successful with active participation and wholehearted co-operation of readers, writers and publishers. The book fair is a manifestation of the creativity of our writers, he added.

He thanked all concerned for extending all out cooperation for holding the month-long fair that began on February 1.

'Publishers seem to be happy with the sale. The sale record is quite high compared to previous years,' said Osman Gani of Agamee Prakashani.

Sales at the Bangla Academy stall were less than that of the last year. The academy stall sold books worth around Tk 58,16,720 as compared to around Tk 6.2 million last year.

This year, the new arrivals included 315 collections of stories, 481 novels, 202 collections of essays, 621 collections of poems, 80 research works, 110 collections of rhymes, 210 juvenile literatures, 92 biographies, four complete works, 77 books on War of Independence, 13 plays, 67 science books, 51 travelogues, 40 books on history, 32 on politics, 28 on medical science, 14 on computer, 26 of jokes, 28 on religion, 36 translation works, 4 dictionaries, 13 science fictions and 180 books of other genres.

The academy will soon announce the names of three best books published during the fair and the awards will be handed over to the recipients at a function.
