Ekushey observed with lighting 0.01m candles in Narail

JHENIDAH, Feb 22: 'Language Movement and International Mother Language Day' was observed on Saturday evening at Kurir Dob Field in Narail by lighting 0.01 candles. The massive traditional candle lighting programme organised by Ekush Udjapan Parishad, Narail was inaugurated this year by Rizia Khatun, a language heroine. Besides, 25 balloons were flown.
This programme has been observed with candle lighting since 1998. More than 2,000 volunteers took part in the noble lighting work, and the whole field started to dazzle within 30 minutes. Thousands of people from in and around the district crowed the spot to see the colourful function.
The convener said that the light from the candles will enlighten all the languages and cultures around the world.
Among others, eminent cultural personality Prof Munshi Hafizur Rahman, convener of the celebration committee, Deputy Commissioner of Narail Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Police Super Sardar Rakibul Islam, Zila Parisahd Adminitrator Ad Shubas Chandra Bose, district Awami League general secretary Nizam Uddin Khan Nilu and Krira Sangstha general secretary Ashikur Rahman Miku, attended the function.
Nilphamari
Our Correspondent in Nilphamari reports: Nilphamari district observed International Mother Language Day and Language Martyrs Day, the 21st of February in traditional manner. National flags were hoisted at half mast and black flags hoisted in government office buildings, residential houses and shops in the municipality.
The district administration chalked out an elaborate programme to observe the day that included placing floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar, book, poster and picture exhibition, essay competition among the college and school students, special prayers for the martyrs at mosques, temples and so on.
Tangail
Our Correspondent in Tangail reports: The Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day were observed in Tangail Saturday in a befitting manner, recalling the supreme sacrifice of the martyrs of 21 February in 1952.
The day's programme began through placing of floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar at midnight. Deputy commissioner Tangail  Mahbub Hossain and Police Supar Tangail Saleh Mohd Tanvir offered their tributes  by placing floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar at 12: 01 am. After that all the political parties and social organisations offered their due respect.
