Ekushey observed with solemnity in dists

RANGPUR, Feb 22: The Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day was celebrated here in Rangpur in a befitting manner Monday, recalling the supreme sacrifices of the martyrs of 1952 language movement.
The celebration began at 12:01 am when Rangpur divisional commissioner Jasimuddin Ahmed placed floral wreath at Central Shaheed Minar followed by deputy commissioner of Rangpur B.M. Enamul Haque.
Later, police super Saleh Md. Tanvir, political leaders, freedom fighters, socio-cultural and educational institutions, different organisations and private bodies, NGOs, professionals and commoners also placed wreaths and paid tributes to the martyrs of great language movement.
The day's other programmes included hoisting of national flag at half-mast atop all government, semi-government, private and commercial buildings, and educational institutions.
The district administration organised a discussion meeting on the significance of the day at local public library ground participated by freedom fighters, educationists and professionals.
Besides, cultural functions, photo exhibition, documentary films, various competitions including painting, essay writing, hand writing, rendering patriotic songs, sports for the unprivileged children were also held to mark the day.
Special prayers were also arranged in mosques, temples, churches and pagodas seeking divine blessings for eternal peace of the departed souls of the language movement martyrs.
Gopalganj
Our correspondent from Gopalganj reports: The people of Gopalganj observed Amar Edushey February and International Mother Language Day today.
Rallies, discussion meetings, cultural function and art competition marked the occasion.
District administration, pourashava, press club, educational institutions, political parties, NGO's and different section of people in Gopalganj district, paid deep respect and placed flowers on the Shaheed Minar, early in the morning.
The national flags was hoisted half-mast atop government, autonomous and private buildings in the District.
On the day, a discussion meeting with a four-day long book fair was inaugurated at local Shilpakola Academy premises.
Sheikh Yousuf Haurn D.C. Gopalganj inaugurated the book fair.
Gaibandha
BSS adds: Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day was observed in the district amid due respect and renewed pledge to maintain sanctity of the day.
In observance of the day, the district administration, ruling party Awami League and other political parties, various cultural organisations and educational institutions chalked out elaborate programmes of the day.
The day's programme began through placing floral wreaths at the Saheed Minar of the Gaibandha Poura Park at midnight.
The programmes included hoisting of national flag at half- mast atop all the government, private, commercial buildings and educational institutions, wearing black badge and bringing out Provat Ferry.
The programmes also included documentary film show on Amar Ekushey arranged by District Information Office, children's art competition organised by Bangladesh Shishu Academy and hand writing competition arranged by Udichi Shilpi Gosti.
Besides, special prayers were also offered in mosques, temples and churches in the district seeking the blessing of Almighty Allah for the salvation of the departed souls of the language heroes.
In addition, a discussion meeting organised by district administration on the significance of the day was held at the auditorium of District Shilpakala Academy Building of the town here with additional deputy commissioner (General) Ranjit Kumar Das in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M. Shahidul Islam attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest and police super Bashudev Banik and chief executive officer of Zilla Parishad Kallol Kumar Chakrabartee were present as the special guests.
The function was also addressed, among others, by District AL acting president Advocate Syed Shamsul Alam Hiru and general secretary AL Abu Bakar Siddique while NDC Abul Kashem M. Shahin was the moderator.
DC M. Shahidul Islam in his speech said the significance of Ekushey February is immense for enriching our national life and has brought international glory for the country through receiving recognition of the International Mother Language Day.
