Saturday, 12 July 2008

KUAKATA (Potuakhali), July 11 (BSS): Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed today said Bangladesh needs honest and efficient national leaders to ensure rapid economic growth and to free the country from poverty and hunger.

People should vote for honest, efficient and visionary leaders who would exert their best efforts for translating the dreams of freeing Bangladesh from the vices like poverty, corruption and hunger, he added.

The Army Chief made this call while addressing a function on handing over of land ownership papers organised by the ORCA (Old Rajshahi Cadets Association) members in Narikel Bazar area on Kuakata beach.

He handed over 80 land ownership documents to the Sidr-hit families.

The ORCA, has renovated 80 houses ravaged by cyclone Sidr, at a cost of Tk 8.5 million (85 lakh) from its members' contribution. The organisation has also built a mosque, dug a pond apart from setting up three deep tube- wells.

ORCA President engineer Siddiqur Rahman chaired the meeting while ORCA Vice-president Col (retd) Feroz gave address of welcome. General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 55th Infantry Division Maj Gen Rafiqul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Potuakhali AGM Meer Mashiur Alam and ORCA members were present.

General Moeen said the nation would remember the members of Bangladesh Army with gratitude for their best efforts in preparing a flawless and accurate database of the voters across the country.

He said rigging and unethical practices in the forthcoming election would eventually invite dishonest, inefficient and corrupt leaders who would not be in a position to guide the nation in fulfilling the challenges of the century.

"There is no shortage of natural resources in the country. We have plenty of agricultural resources, a thriving readymade garment and promising pharmaceutical sector, and important energy resources like coal, gas and oil," General Moeen said.

"We also have the longest sea beach in the world, which could be utilised to boost the potential tourism sector," he said.

"What we really lack is not the natural resources but an efficient leadership to take the country to economic prosperity by making best uses of the natural resources," he added.

The Army Chief said Bangladesh needs to give priority to the agriculture sector to make the country a food surplus one from a food import-dependent country.

Gen Moeen said Bangladesh Army will continue assisting various development activities in the Sidr-affected areas until mitigation of plights of the victims.

"I am confident that if we all work together, Bangladesh will become a middle-income country by the year 2015," said Moeen.
