Election tribunals formed

Tuesday, 5 May 2015

The Election Commission (EC) Monday formed election tribunals to dispose of complaints regarding the recently concluded elections to the three city corporations in Dhaka and Chittagong, reports UNB.
The one-member election tribunals were formed comprising  Joint--District and Session Judges, 1st Court--Dhaka and Chittagong--to receive and dispose of complaints filed by aggrieved persons against anomalies including vote-rigging and election result manipulation.
Besides, the commission formed three two-member election appellate tribunals with additional district and session judges, 1st Court--Dhaka and Chittagong--as chairmen and additional district magistrates as members.
Any complaints can be lodged with their respective election tribunal over polls manipulation within 30 days after the formation of the tribunal as per the local government (City Corporation) election rules, 2010.
Being aggrieved, the decision of the election tribunals can be challenged with the respective election appellate tribunal within 30 days of the judgment being passed.
The elections to Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka South City Corporation and Chittagong City Corporation were held amid huge allegations of irregularities and rigging on April 28.
