Elections won't be held under emergency: Adviser Zillur

BANDARBAN, Dec 1 (UNB): Commerce Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman said Monday elections would not be held under the state of emergency by all means, as the government and the Election Commission (EC) were heading towards holding an acceptable national election on December 29.
"The emergency will be lifted any time before the upcoming election as per the demand of the political parties and the EC's recommendations and the government's consideration," he told a function organised marking the nationalisation of Bandarban Women's College.
He also said the government would take measures so that the voters could cast their votes without any hassle.
Replying to a query about upazila polls, Dr Zillur said there was no dispute about holding of upazila elections. "The date for upazila elections have been announced and it would take place at the stipulated time."
Dr Zillur, also in-charge of the education ministry, said the present government was implementing various programmes giving emphasis on women empowerment and education, as half of the country's total population was women.
About the nationalisation of Bandarban Women's College, he said it was an example of the government's good intention as it was working with a fair mind removing all regional discriminations at all levels.
Presided over by Bandarban Hill District Council Chairman Thanjama Lusai, the programme was attended, among others, by CA's Special Assistant Raja Debashish Roy, DG of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Khan Habibur Rahman and DC Moudud AK Quayum Chowdhury.
