Electrical products fair begins tomorrow to woo foreign buyers

The two-day Bangladesh Electrical Products Fair - 2007 will kick off tomorrow (Monday) at Dhaka Sheraton with a view to promoting the local electric products.
Bangladesh Electrical Merchandise Manufacturers' Association (BEMMA), in collaboration with IFC-SouthAsia Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF), is organising the fair.
BEMMA organised a press conference in the city Saturday for highlighting various aspects of the fair.
A total of 60 electric product-producing companies are likely to participate in the fair, where a large number of local electrical products like wire, cable, fan, bulb, ballast, electric motor, transformer, generator, etc will be displayed.
Commerce Secretary Feroz Ahmed will inaugurate the fair which will remain open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Addressing the press conference BEMMA President Sultan Ahmed Bhuiyan said the sector is fulfilling around 80 per cent of the total demand of the country's electrical goods. It is estimated by BEMMA that there are demands for electrical goods worth Tk 10 billion (1,000 crore) per year in the country.
The BEMMA president also said the fair has been organised to attract the local as well as foreign buyers to give the sector a boost. The sector has potentials to grab the foreign markets, as its exports have been increasing gradually, he added.
According to the BEMMA statistics, the sector exported over Tk 0.71 billion in 2003-04, Tk 1.36 billion in 2004-05, Tk 1.97 billion in 2005-06, and over the past ten months up to April its exports reached nearly Tk 2.03 billion. The sector mainly exports cables, fans and other electrical products.
BEMMA leaders Md Razzak Hossain Akand, Syed Masudur Rahman, Mohiuddin Ahmed and Md Amir Hossain Hawlader were also present on the occasion.
