KHULNA, Mar 30: Electronic Cash Registers (ECR) are yet to be used in the business establishments in Khulna City Corporation (KCC) area although letters were issued and meetings were earlier held to bring awareness among the businessmen by the concerned department.
While visiting the local markets, it was found that most of the business establishments are advancing very slowly to introduce the system. As a result, most of the value added tax (VAT) paid by the buyers and consumers are not deposited to the government treasury.
Tax department source said that ECR was not possible to be installed in large and medium business centres in the last three months though operation was scheduled to commence from January in Khulna City Corporation as well as other City Corporations of the country.
Sources said that tax department has made ECR system and POS software compulsory in different large and medium business centres in city corporation area to bring transparency in their transaction.
POS software was supplied by the tax department for business establishments like hotel, restaurant, fast food shop, sweetmeat shop, furniture, marketing centre, beauty parlour, community centre, departmental store, general store and other ten kinds of business centres.
Source said that the tax departments identified about 70 organisations in KCC area where ECR use was compulsory. Of them, 18 organisations have already started the ECR system and others will start in phases.
Joint Tax Commissioner Azizur Rahman informed that the ECR system has been introduced at some specific organisations of the city corporation area of the country from January of the current year.
He said about 150 businesspersons have been awarded with the system and the installation will be completed by next June. Later it will be started at district level. He also expressed hope that VAT collection would be increased by 20 to 30 per cent when ECR system is functioning as usual.
Asaduzzaman, owner of Asad Departmental Store of the city, said that ECR system is essential for businesses to bring transparency in their transaction. However, it is very difficult to purchase an ECR machine by general traders.
Abul Kalam Azad, a retired banker of the city, said when the system would be implemented, a huge amount of VAT would be collected and deposited with the government treasury.
