Embroidery brings self-reliance to 1,000 rural women in Bogra

BOGRA, Sep 7: Ornamental stitching, embroidering, sewing clothes and spangling on women's clothes have brought happiness for around 1000 rural women in Bogra district including twelve upazilas from last ten years.
Receiving short-term training from Youth Development Centre the unemployment poor, divorced, physically challenged and uneducated women now making incomes living both in rural and urban areas of the district on the eve of festivities.
While visiting the centre this correspondent found that the women are passing busy time sewing clothes across the district and supplying inputs to around 1000 women of all ages of these villages and they earn excellent wages every week through ornamental stitching, embroidery and spangling on sarees.
The rural females with assistance of Ladies Trailor Sewing Training Centre, run by Rupali Begum, 40, wife of a college teacher of masterpara village, have now adopted embroidering, spangling and ornamental stitching on sarees, three pieces and other women's' clothes as profession to change their fortune.
Head of the training centre Abdur Rahman said, "The rural women have won over poverty in Bogra district through sewing clothes. A lot of unemployed and distressed women, victims of domestic violence, divorcees, widows and physically handicapped have got the way of happiness.
One of the pioneering entrepreneurs of spangling industry of Rupali has expanded the venture generating employment for many poor women and created expert artisans who earn around Tk 300 to 400 per day." he added.
This extra money helps to educate children, to ensure sanitation facilities and eradicate course of poverty from the society forever.
When contracted Jubo Unnayan officer said the local entrepreneurs started such initiatives in scattered ways at the initial stage several years ago in the region and these home-based ornamental stitching work has now turned into a growing cottage industry.
Many entrepreneurs have launched small-scale enterprises in association with local traders and entrepreneurs to change the rural economy, he said.
