MADARIPUR, Dec 28 (UNB): Accumulation of Silt and emergence of shoals in most of the rivers flowing through the district is affecting communication, navigation, trade and commerce as well as irrigation. The rivers Padma, Arial Kha, Palorddi and Kumar have been used in the past by the businessmen for the transportation of merchandise to different destinations by boats, but these rivers have been silted up at many points hampering the plying of boats. The rivers have been dried up at some points affecting irrigation on croplands. Innumerable shoals and chars have been emerged in the Arial Khan, Padma, Palordi and Kumar rivers hindering the movement of launches, trawlers and others rivers transports. Even the plying of country boats is being hampered due to the silt and sharp fall in the water level. The river communication, which is one of the most important and easy means of communication in Shibchar, Sadar, Rajoir and Kalkini upazilas, is being disrupted due to the rapid accumulation of silt.
