Emergency services at DMCH stopped
Tuesday, 6 May 2014
The emergency ward of DMCH stopped its services Tuesday after a clash erupted between intern doctors of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Dhaka University (DU) students over using an elevator at the hospital. Two DU students were beaten up by doctors. Later, the students gathered in greater numbers and attacked DMCH's emergency department. Services at the emergency ward have been stopped as doctors stopped working to protest the attack. DMCH police outpost's inspector Mozammel Haque told bdnews24.com that few students of DU's Shahidullah Hall came to the hospital to visit the mother of their classmates. He said that the students were activists of ruling Awami League's student front Bangladesh Chhatra League. "Two Chattra League activists Ashuqul and Jasim boarded an elevator meant for doctors around 11.30 am that led to a quarrel with the intern doctors. At one stage, the interns beat up the students," said inspector Haque. The hospital's security rescued the students. Later, around 1pm, DU students gathered in greater numbers and vandalised DMCH's emergency ward.
