Emphasis on English

Wednesday, 25 May 2022

In today's globalised world, there are many reasons why students should learn English. Currently, there are around 1.5 billion English speakers around the globe, which represent a fifth of the world's total population. Over the centuries, English has become the prime language not only for international communication, but for international business, academia, medicine, science, technology and law. When you consider this, it is no surprise that so many people opt for learning English in order to enhance the opportunities available to them.
But it is unfortunate that most of our students in Bangladesh are weak in English. With the exception of a few English medium schools in the country, the students of other educational institutions are lagging far behind in acquiring English language skills. This problem is more apparent in our rural areas. As a result, when these students migrate abroad for higher education they face great difficulty. They cannot decide whether they will learn English or the contents of their course. In between the dilemma, these students often lose their interest in studying abroad or they simply spend a lot of time to overcome their weakness.
Therefore, I urge the authorities concerned to ensure that students of every educational institution of Bangladesh get the opportunity to learn English effectively from the elementary level.
